Are Tottenham Hotspur a real title contender?
The Premier League season 2023-2024 commenced in July. A lot of signings were made with the hope to make sure to winning the title, certainly not by every single team in the division but surely for the top six. Club Records were broken by the teams as they perused marquee players with humongous fees. For example, Arsenal bought Declan Rice for a mammoth 105 million to not stumble just like last season and compete for the title and eventually win it.
Tottenham on the other end did the opposite as they let go of their club captain and also their record goal scorer Harry Kane for a whopping 100 million to Bayern Munich. Fortunes weren’t with the Spurs side in the season 2022-2023 as they couldn’t qualify for any European competition.
Tottenham made the best possible start to the new season, they were top of the league after 10 games and their new Manager Ange Postecoglou hasn’t made the club and the fans miss the presence of Harry Kane at all. They’re now fourth favourites to win the league in the Premier League odds, which is far better than many expected at this stage.
The current new captain of the club Heung Min-Son has had a great start to the campaign as with 11 matches already played, the South Korean has scored 8 goals so far with an assist to his name. The money received by selling the previous club captain Harry Kane was reinvested in buying quality players like James Madison who has been a phenomenon himself scoring 3 and assisting 5 in the tournament already. Micky Van de Ven has been solid in the defense starting every game this season and already scoring a goal for the Lilywhites.
A major signing of this summer window was a possible number 1 goalkeeper and as a result, Guglielmo Vicario was bought from Italian side Empoli. The shot-stopper has had 4 clean shits this term and has almost recorded a form of 7 in most of the matches. A like-to-like Harry Kane replacement was bought in the form of Brennon Johnson from Nottingham Forest but has yet to show his worth of the 55 million that was paid for him.
Astonishingly no one expected Tottenham to be at the top of the table with no losses recorded till now, certainly the agonizing pain of not participating in any European competition will hurt them, and at the same time not playing a lot of games due to only playing Premier League matches will prove to be a less hectic schedule for them to focus more and only on the Premier League.
Their Australian coach will also be able to just concentrate on a single competition with him now more concerned to keep his team on top of the table. The Gaffer has mostly been seen cracking jokes during the post-match conferences and interviews about the games. The most hilarious statement he said in an interview with Peter Crouch was -“I’m just copying Pep mate “ on his style of play being discussed.
2011-2012 was the season where Tottenham recorded their best start of the campaign with 22 points. Surpassing the previous record this season they have a total of 26 points in the bag from a possible 30 in 11 matches.
A team that won the league title so long ago during the black and Whites era will be hoping to continue the same form to have their hands on the league title in the current Premier League season once again with their North London rivals lurking behind them with the same form of remaining unbeaten till now. The score remained 2-2 when they faced each other this time out at the Emirates stadium with one more Leg yet to be played on 27th April 2024 if not rescheduled.
Tottenham won most of their trophies during the 90’s with their last trophy being the Football League cup also known as the Carabao Cup in the 2007-2008 season. Feels like the time will come sooner than later for them to have a second trophy for themselves in the 2000’s.
