Chelsea name Petr Cech in their 25-man Premier League squad
Chelsea have sensationally named retired goalkeeper Petr Cech in their 25-man Premier League squad even though the veteran is the club’s technical and performance advisor and not under a playing contract.
The 38-year-old bid farewell to the sport at the conclusion of the 18/19 season, making the curtains fall down after what was an illustrious career with many cherishable moments.
He won four Premier League titles, one Champions League and a Europa League during his time at Stamford Bridge and he further spent his career at neighborhood rivals, Arsenal for whom he played 110 games.
Soon after retirement, Cech returned to Chelsea to become a member of their backroom staff.
The goalkeeping standards are down to their lowest at Chelsea as the club-record signing Kepa Arrizabalaga turned out to be an absolute disaster for the club.
He is still very early in his career and has a lot of time to rectify but the Premier League has just not been his place since the day he arrived.
Willy Caballero hasn’t done much better either and Chelsea are yet to make a call on his future. To solve the crisis, Chelsea signed Edouard Mendy from Rennes, the very same move Cech made in 2004. The Senegalese will become the first-priority keeper for the Blues but once he is fully fit. As of now, Chelsea have shown more trust in Cech has been serving the club for a very long time.
The interesting part is Cech’s last outing was not even a football game but a keeper in a professional Ice Hockey team, Guildford Phoenix. The Blues confirmed the news on their official website though they have mentioned that his inclusion is a ‘precautionary step due to the unprecedented conditions currently caused by COVID-19.
His position will be of a non-contract player and it will be very interesting to see how things turn out for the Blues.
