Former Liverpool great surprised at the Reds' lack of intent to sign Ziyech

Former Liverpool star Jamie Carraghar has stated that he is surprised that his club did not move for the Ajax wizard Hakim Ziyech. 

The Dutch club has recently agreed upon a deal for the Moroccan international with Liverpool’s Premier League rivals, Chelsea FC.

The Blues have managed to get the right-winger for a very cut-throat price. While it was expected that Ziyech will start a bidding war during the summer, the Londoners have managed to secure his services for only £33.3 million. 

The deal also mentions of additional performance related add-ons of £3.4 million, making the total possible amount only £36.7 million.

While Chelsea didn’t make any signing in the winter transfer window, Liverpool also didn’t do much business. 

They signed talented Japanese midfielder Takumi Minamino from Red Bull Salzburg, but that is just about it. They also had a very quiet summer transfer window.

Some pundits expected Liverpool to chase Ziyech, but Chelsea were the first to his signature. 

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has expressed his surprise as Jurgen Klopp’s team let the lightning fast winger join a rival for such a low price.

“He (Hakim Ziyech) was outstanding last season in Ajax’s Champions League run. I thought he was a player Liverpool could look at, as cover for Mane or Salah. 

"But it looks as though Frank Lampard has got his business done early,” Carragher said in Sky Sports’ podcast, as per quotes in The Boot Room.

Ziyech has been immense for Ajax since he has joined them FC Twente. He has scored 47 goals in 159 appearances. 

He made the headlines last season, where he scored 21 times in just 49 appearances. Banking on his performances, Ajax reached the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

He has been in great form this season as well. He has scored 8 goals this season already, and also has made 21 assists. 

Chelsea have certainly got themselves a pretty good player. It will be interesting to see what Liverpool does in the summer, after missing out on Ziyech.
