Lucas Bergvall : Tottenham's new Swedish wonderkid

Tottenham Hotspurs are blessed with another Lucas to grace the new spaceship of a ground in the 20s. After cult hero Lucas Moura left Spurs to go back to his native club Sao Paulo in Brazil, it's the Swede who has arrived in North London to fill up the Lucas Quota  and shunning the Catalan Giants Intro the process , who were the front runners for his signature up until Spurs decided to swoop in and Seal the deal. 

Overview

From the class of 06 , Lucas might be too young to remember Tottenham League Cup win in 2008, but he certainly has the maturity to be a part of the puzzle which can bring back some much needed silverware to the whites. Born in Stockholm,  the only syndrome he gives are headaches to opposition . 
 

Lucas had his senior team breakthrough via Brommapojkarna at just 15 years of age in the third division of Swedish football. Although it being just a solitary appearance as he went on to register 12 appearances in the 2nd division next season, impressing and earning a move to Djurgården where he got noticed by the mainstream media. 

Though , he was already on the radar of some big clubs and had gone on trial at Manchester United when he was 14 years old. Lucas made his debut as a starter for the team in Allsvenskan in the game against current champions BK Häcken on 24 May 2023 and the fact that just less than an year later, he is already  confirmed to move to Tottenham in an  £8.5 million.

The deal truly speaks of how highly related he is as a potential world beater and if that gamble proves right, then Tottenham have unearthed a silky attacking midfielder who also potentially has the physical frame to survive the rigours of Premier League football shall it reach to that stage.
 

He might be only 18 but he has risen through the youth ranks in the national setup and already has a senior cap for Sweden. Although he is still not cap tied having only made his debut in a friendly against Estonia last month. 

Playing Style 

For someone who is supposed to be a silky attacking midfield baller, Lucas is surprisingly useful in set pieces largely thanks to his height and his reading of the game and movement  inside the box in these situations. He has that all guns blazing approach to his ariel duels helped by the fact that his physical presence combined with his grit and hunger make him such a threat at set pieces as well as on field ariel duels and makes crunching tackles even though he can be reckless at times but that is normal considering his age.

Possession, Creativity, Flair

He might not have breathtaking pace or 1v1 ability for  that saucy highlight package, but he definitely has an eye for an outrageous  pass, Elite Close control, surprise bursting run from the middle of the park like fellow Scandinavians such as Eriksen and Odegaard. Bergvall works best either as a number 8 or as an Attacking mid though he might also potentially have a future at central mid due to his combative approach to the game , generally being press resistant  and  having enough skill on his feet. 

That being said , he won't be best suited to being a pivot as that would end up restricting his natural style of play of using surprise bursts of run as a weapon and would require him to hold his positions at almost all times to maintain shape. 

Shooting

His shooting has potential and he has got the fundamental right, taking up good positions inside the box and scoring via the finest shot he has in his locker. But while goalscoring is not his primary forte, he still has improve a lot in terms of consistently getting shots on target and conversion. Basically overall output in the striking department though their is a player in him which can score 10+ goals considering his heading ability along with that.

While in possession he does have the nuanced understanding of one touch passing,  recycling of possession, head movement, scanning  but it's difficult  to read too much into statistical metrics as he is constantly being shuffled around. Although he might turn out to be a regista but only time will tell if he does.
