Manchester City not to spend money in January, United only looking for “short-term” targets

Pep Guardiola has made it clear that Manchester City are not going to spend any money in the winter transfer window and he will finish the season with the same squad that he has at his disposal.

There were speculations that Guardiola might look to land a quality centre-back in winter to put Fernandinho back in his defensive midfield position.

Fernandinho is not able to play in defensive midfield at the moment as the manager has slotted him as centre-back after Vincent Kompany left the club in the summer and Aymeric Laporte got injured.

As per Guardiola, however, he is looking to change nothing in the middle of the season. He will continue with the same personnel and will only reflect at the end of the season what he has to do going forward.

City’s local rivals Manchester United has also ruled out the possibility of any big signings in the January transfer window.

The Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has insisted that the players that the club has zeroed in are all long-term targets and there is no rush to sign them in January.

However, if there is somebody who the club believes can provide them a short-term fix. They might go for those types of players as the transfer window opens in a couple of weeks’ time.

“Targets that we’re looking at, they’re long-term targets. If there’s something popping up that might be a short-term, maybe. But we’re always thinking long-term.” Solskjaer was quoted saying.

While City are almost out of the Premier League title race with 14 points behind the table toppers Liverpool, United are facing a stiff competition to finish in the top-four. The 20-time Premier League champions are currently on the sixth position in the table with 25 points from 17 games.
