Jose Mourinho hits back at Paul Merson's comments on Harry Kane's future

Jose Mourinho has passionately hit back at comments that said Harry Kane will not be able to do well under the Portuguese manager. Kane’s performance in the 1-1 draw against Manchester United at home former Arsenal man Paul Merson to inflict doubts over the future of the English skipper in Mourinho’s system and style of play.

Mourinho was fully prepared at a news conference ahead of Tuesday’s Premier League match with the Hammers and the ex-Manchester United boss wasted no time in putting the facts straight. He commenced with expressing his respect toward Merson and later claimed that the Arsenal star’s comments were an unfair analysis.

He then began listing the forwards that have played under him, including the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Zlatan Ibrahimovic along with their statistics. Kane had managed to score seven goals in his ten games before he injured his hamstring on the first day of 2020. The game against Manchester United a few days ago was the first time the forward managed to play for 90 minutes, marking his return to action.

He started his response by saying, “I feel a bit strange about some analysis and some comments, the beginning of some comments and analysis started by Paul.” He then compared Harry Kane to Anthony Martial in the game as both the strikers did not get enough chances to put their stamps on the game.

Mourinho then added to his defense saying, “I had one guy called Drogba. He played for me over four seasons. He scored 186 goals which gives an average of 46 goals per season. I had one guy that is also not bad, he plays for Juventus now. He played three seasons for me. He scored 168 goals, which gives an average of 56 goals per season. I had another one called Milito. He played one season for me and he scored 30 goals. He won three titles and of course, the average is 30.”

He went on to give Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s example too and then concluded by saying, “So, dear Paul, I have lots of respect for you. I think Harry Kane has no problems at all to score goals in my team. Especially when he is fit, fresh, when he has routines of playing. So, that is my message to somebody that I have lots of respect for.”
