Players hated by their former Premier League clubs

Every Premier League team has more than a few stories of failed transfers and disappointing players but sometimes a player is so bad that they leave their own fans screaming in anger.

It takes more than a few underwhelming appearances to attract those kinds of feelings. That kind of hatred is built for those players who mistreat the club or the supporters and the fans never forget things like that.

Here’s a look at some of the Premier League side’s most hated former players:

1. Arsenal- Emmanuel Adebayor

For years, people feel that this place should’ve been reserved for Ashley Cole, whose transfer to Chelsea in 2006 left more than just a bad taste in Arsenal’s mouth. However, the contender selected her deserves it more.

Adebayor was seen interested in a lot of rival clubs but his intentions were confirmed when he sprinted the entire length of the Etihad Stadium to celebrate in front of the Arsenal fans in 2009. Other clubs must have loved it but the Gooners will never forget the disrespect.

2. Chelsea- Winston Bogarde

For younger fans, the choice would be Thibaut Courtois, who forced a move to Real Madrid in 2018. However, Winston Bogarde’s four-year spell at the club between 2000 and 2004 still has a lot of fans riled up.

The Dutchman penned a big contract but fell out of favor just after a few weeks. Chelsea wanted to sell the player but Bogarde was so unprofessional, he publicly insisted he would rather take the money and rot away in the reserves than leave for a new team.

3. Liverpool- El Hadji Diouf

Regarded as the man who could lead Liverpool to Premier League glory (not Raheem Sterling) in 2002, El Hadji Diouf did nothing but increased the problems for the Reds. His lack of goals frustrated the supported but it was the player’s attitude that led the things to get out of hand.

He made a habit of spitting at people and regularly had issues with Steven Gerrard, who felt Diouf didn’t care about the club at all. When it came to choosing sides, it was obvious that the fans chose Gerrard.

4. Manchester United- Carlos Tevez

Carlos Tevez became a popular player when he was on loan at Old Trafford between 2007 and 2009 and that led to Manchester United to trigger their option to sign the Argentine permanently.

They offered him a contract, which would make him one of the club’s top earners but after complaining about lack of game time despite playing more than Wayne Rooney and Dimitar Berbatov.

Tevez committed the ultimate sin and swapped Manchester United for the Citizens and hence he can never be forgiven.

5. Newcastle United- Michael Owen

Newcastle broke their transfer record to sign Michael Owen from Real Madrid in 2005 and they thought he would be the main man to help them get back to the top of the Premier League table. However, things didn’t go as expected.

The expensive signing was very poor on the pitch and was injury-prone for most of the season. But his displays in the 2008/09 season disappointed the fans the most.

The club were battling relegation and Owen was accused of not doing enough and simply waiting for the season to end so that he could leave.

He later confesses via BBC Sport that he regretted joining the club and ended up fighting with Alan Shearer on Twitter. Till today, being Newcastle’s record signing is cursed, ask Miguel Almiron and Joelinton.

6. Tottenham- Sol Campbell

Once a Tottenham Hotspur icon, former centre-back Sol Campbell threw it all away by joining Arsenal in 2001.

However, it was not only joining a rival club that angered the fans but the manner in which he did it. With his contract expiring, he regularly insisted he was going to stay but when he was offered a new deal that would have made Campbell their highest-ever earner.

He then pulled a U-turn and joined Arsenal, a team that he had previously insisted he would never even dream about joining.
