Premier League Team of the Week (Matchweek 7)

Matchweek 7 of the Premier League saw the usual suspects cruise through and there were no major upsets. 

The Big Six earned crucial points to stay on course in the table. Champions City had it easy as they had no issues dispatching Everton. Tottenham put on a brave show as they saw off Saints with only ten men.

The Red Devils hosted Arsenal in the blockbuster clash of the weekend. A well taken Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang strike saw the Gunners claim a share of the spoils. With the draw, Arsenal now sits fourth in the table, whereas, Manchester United is languishing at tenth with nine points. This is United’s worst start to a top-flight season in 30 years.

League leaders Liverpool had a tough test away at Sheffield and they just sneaked through with a solitary Gini Wijnaldum goal. Chelsea put on a great performance at home to defeat the Seagulls and Leicester City continued their terrific start to the season with a resounding  victory against Newcastle.

The Foxes had the most emphatic victory over the weekend and Brendan Rodgers men dominating the Premier League Team of the Week is a no-brainer. Let’s take a look at the others who made the cut.

Goalkeeper

Rui Patricio takes on the gloves for his clean sheet at home against Watford.

The Portuguese made a total of five saves on his way to keep his second clean sheet of the season. He sniffed out any danger that came his way. 

There were some other contenders as well but Patricio's commanding performance gets him the spot.

Defenders

We have a five man defence which includes two wing backs. The Gameweek saw a few defenders performing admirably well and also getting on the score sheet.

Matt Doherty and Ricardo Pereira found the back of the net for their respective teams.

Doherty sneak into a centre forward position to roll in a decisive cross to open  the scoring for Wolves. Whereas, Pereira made it two goals in two games with a well taken strike. Both the right backs are very attack minded and give a whole new dimension to their side’s style of play.

Willy Boly is a rock in the right of Wolves defence and was on hand to deal with any danger. He made nine clearances and six crunching tackles in this gameweek to stamp his authority. 

Ben Chilwell is one hell of a talent as evidenced by the fact that Pep Guardiola is a huge admirer and one can see why. The Englishman put in an assured performance for his side. He timed his surging runs perfectly and was also on hand to perform his defensive duties. 

Midfielders

Wilfred Ndidi was doing what he does best. Making tackles, winning the ball for his team. But in this gameweek, he added a goal to his already impressive performances over the season. The Nigerian is one of those players who goes under the radar. 

Ndidi is the man responsible for Leicester’s amazing start to the season as he does all the dirty work and thus allow his teammates to play freely with no defensive responsibilities to think about.

Tanguy Ndombele is arguably the most shrewd signing of the summer transfer window. Spurs have a gem of a player on their hands. The France international scored his second goal of the season. He seem to be present everywhere on the pitch as evidenced by the fact that he made four tackles and also had two aerial ball wins.

Mahrez, on the other hand, was the chief architect of Citizen’s dominance over Everton away from home. He started the match and took this opportunity with both hands. The former Leicester City man scored a wonderful free-kick to give City the lead which they hung onto.

The Algerian had five shots on target and also made five key passes. One might wonder, how on earth he can’t find a place in Pep Guardiola starting eleven more often.

Forwards

Jamie Vardy scored a brace in Leicester demolition of Newcastle. He has now more Premier League goals than Cristiano Ronaldo. Not bad for a striker who was playing in the fifth division of England football just seven years ago. 

He has started the season with a bang and now has five goals in seven appearances. If he repeats his performance of Leicester’s title winning season, we are in for a treat.

Josh King is accompanying Vardy up front. The Norwegian does not get the limelight too often but the effort he puts in for his team is no less than his more illustrious teammate, Callum Wilson. 

The forward drifted into good spaces throughout the game and made life hard for the opposition.He scored his second goal of the season and also assisted Wilson to clinch a draw for his side.
