Manchester City want Brendan Rodgers to replace Guardiola

Manchester City have identified Leicester City's manager Brendan Rodgers as their preferred choice as the successor of Pep Guardiola when the Spaniard decides to call his time at the Etihad. Guardiola's contract with the Citizens ends in 2021 and the Man City boss has stated previously that he will honour his contract. 

But even 2021 is not too far. In fact, it's only one and half years down the line and I believe that Manchester City are looking to life after the former Barcelona and Bayern boss leaves the club following his sensational tenure with the club. 

Manchester City have become one of the most dominant forces in Europe under Guardiola even though they failed to win the Champions League. However, they have been the most dominant side in England and won two back to back Premier League titles with record points 100 and 98 respectively. 

They seem to be on their way to missing out on their third successive League title with Liverpool leading the title chase by quite some distance. The Citizens are even behind Leicester City who have also been tremendous in the ongoing season.

Brendan Rodgers has made a huge impact at the King Power Stadium since he joined the club in the middle of the last season. The Foxes are part of the title race, which is a huge achievement in itself and Manchester City seem to recognize that. 

Rodgers is a proven manager in the Premier League and the Champions League. Also, his managing philosophy is quite similar and in fact inspired from Guardiola. 

Rodgers is firm believer of passing and attacking football and Leicester City have been one of the most entertaining teams in the Premier League this season. 

Arsenal also wanted former Celtic and Liverpool manager to take over from sacked Unai Emery, but he committed to Leicester this week and signed a new contract worth £40million until 2025. 

After putting pen to paper, Rodgers stated that he wanted to “win trophies” and he remains fiercely ambitious. The Northern Irishman believes he can be a success at one of England’s major clubs after being sacked by Liverpool in 2015. 

He almost guided Liverpool to the Premier League title back in 2014, but the Reds lost out to Manchester City in the closing stages of the league.

Guardiola’s number two, Mikel Arteta, who is being considered for the Arsenal job, and recently-sacked from Spurs Mauricio Pochettino would also figure in the reckoning to take over from Guardiola.
