Why Steven Gerrard is the ideal choice for Arsenal

Arsenal have endured a tough season so far and it will not be completely wrong to say that they are in the middle of a crisis. With six games without a win in all competitions, the players look a bit disinterested and reports even suggest that the manager has lost the trust of the players. 

Unai Emery's first season was not really special by any means but it was understandable as it was still his learning phase in the Premier League with a team that's been managed by the same manager for the last 22 years. But, this season, things have not improved at all. In fact, it has been the exact opposite.

Emery's job could well be in jeopardy unless the Gunners improve really soon but the fans have already started demands for sacking the Spaniard. A number of big-name managers have also been linked with the Arsenal hot seat including former Liverpool skipper and now Rangers manager Steven Gerrard.

Former Arsenal star Emmanuel Petit has backed the Liverpool legend to become a great success at the Emirates if he indeed lands up at the North London club as their manager. We also share the same opinion to the Frenchman that Gerrard would indeed be a good choice to replace Emery if the Spaniard is sacked and we will give the reasons in this article.

Gerrard's immense knowledge and understanding of English football

Steven Gerrard is hailed as one of the greatest players to have graced the Premier League. He used to be the face of the Premier League in Europe and was well and truly an elite midfielder who could do absolutely everything. There has hardly been a world class midfielder as complete as him. 

Gerrard spent almost the whole of his career in the Premier League playing for his boyhood club Liverpool and knows the English game inside out. He also used to be the captain of the English national team for a long time which speaks for how big his reputation was across the whole country.

In contrast to Gerrard, Emery is still struggling to figure out the needs to succeed in the Premier League and will probably run out of time before he manages to find the right formula. Even though Gerrard, in comparison to Emery, is a newbie in management, he shouldn't find it hard to adapt in English football thanks to his immense experience from his playing days.

Gerrard's leadership ability

In his playing career, Gerrard used to be the epitome of leadership. He is a natural leader and always used to lead his team from the front inspiring them on his own on a number of occasions. And, this Arsenal squad certainly need some to inspire them and Gerard could certainly do that job.

The Arsenal squad right now lack a natural leader. Their senior players have been below par this season. Granit Xhaka started this season as the club captain and was stripped off the captaincy after his row with the club and the fans. He might not even feature for the Gunners ever again.

In such a crisis, it is safe to say that Unai Emery has not been able to fare well at all. Someone like Gerrard, who is an inborn leader, could lift the spirits in the dressing room and make Arsenal great again.

Stevie G's growing reputation in management

Gerrard has not been into management for long. He is 38 years of age now and retired just three years ago. Since then, he has managed the Liverpool academy and then came his big break which was indeed a really tough job.

Rangers came calling for the Liverpool legend with a lucrative offer of stepping into management with one of the most successful clubs in world football. However, the Gers had long been a fallen giant and were still struggling in Scottish Premiership after making their way back to the top tier of Scottish football.

Gerrard has not only steadied the ship at the Ibrox in such a short span of time, he has also gotten Rangers back into title contention. After a long wait of eight years, Celtic are finally fighting to defend their title and Gerrard has to be given credit for that.

Even though he is still new to management, Gerrard would really be a smart choice of Arsenal as the Emery's replacement. And, if they are actually interested in the former English skipper, they have to do it before 2022 as Gerrard has already been touted as the Jurgen Klopp's successor when his contract expires at Anfield.
