Who will score the most goals among the top five European leagues this season?

Everyone knows that football is a team game. But that, in no way, means that there aren't some individual awards up for grabs, which matter.

Lionel Messi has held the European Golden Shoe trophy for the last three seasons, but after the Argentine started the season with injury, it has given the chance to several other players to stake their claim.

Normally, it is the European Shoe holder who ends up as the top scorer among the five main leagues too.

However, we reiterate that this article is not about who is likely to win the aforementioned award, but rather regarding the prospective top scorer among the five main European leagues this season; namely England, Spain, Italy, Germany and France.

Here, we take a look at the current leading scorers in the respective leagues.

5. Karim Benzema

Karim Benzema has spent his career shutting mouths and should be applauded for his 10 years at Real Madrid.

Benzema has faced no shortage of criticism during his career, not least from his own fans and occasionally, from his coaches as well, but the Frenchman has still racked up an impressive tally for Real Madrid and continues to prove his doubters wrong.

In eight league games Benzema has scored six goals to lead the Pichichi standings alongside Villarreal’s Gerard Moreno and Real Betis forward Loren Moron.

4. Victor Osimhen

By the week, Victor Osimhen's reputation as a marksman of some distinction continues to grow. The Lille striker is leading the charts in the Ligue 1 campaign alongside FC Metz' Senegalese marksman Habib Diallo, with seven goals.

The Nigeria international has been unable to export his home form for Lille, and consequently Les Dogues have struggled for results on the road.

However, Osimhen has managed to gain the manager's confidence and his supreme abilities and reflexes are showing in what has been a tremendous start to the season.

3. Sergio Aguero

Tammy Abraham has impressed since becoming a regular starter for Chelsea, and is currently at the top of the Premier League Golden Boot standings alongside Sergio Aguero.

However, despite his stunning form, chances are it will ease off a bit as the season goes on, especially playing in a young team still trying to find its feet in the top flight.

It's a different story for Aguero though. In a team with so much attacking fire power, he could easily score more than goals, making him one of the favourites to grab the honours.

Aguero and Abraham have both scored eight goals in the Premier League since the start of this season.

2. Ciro Immobile

When speaking about elite level strikers, Lazio's Ciro Immobile rarely gets mentioned.

At 29 years of age, Immobile seems to be at his peak and has plenty of time to continue to carve out his legacy. He has truly started the Serie A campaign with a bang, having scored nine goals from just eight appearances.

The Italian might be a handful for his contemporary strikers in this clash of the titans, if his form continues in similar fashion.

1. Robert Lewandowski

The Bayern Munich hitman has started the season like a house on fire, and is the current favourite to go on and become the Golden Shoe award.

He may be 31, but the Pole is seemingly just getting better and better with age, and his performance in the Champions League against Tottenham Hotspur was nothing short of sensational.

If he continues this rich vein of form, Lewandowski could end the season as Europe's finest goalscorer. He has already scored as many as 12 goals from 8 games this season, in the Bundesliga.

Honourable Mentions

Despite not making the list, Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is undoubtedly one of the men to watch. With seven goals to his name already, the pacy striker will continue to find the back of the net on a regular basis, especially with Alexandre Lacazette set to return soon.

FC Barcelona's Luis Suarez and Antoine Griezmann have also picked up after a slow start to the season, and with Lionel Messi back in the side, one can guarantee that he is going to start finding the back of the net more regularly.

Last but not the least, Cristiano Ronaldo. It's hard to rule the legendary forward out of any goalscoring race. If the Portuguese superstar can find a vein of goalscoring form, his tally of four Serie A goals will rapidly increase.

At the moment, though, in terms of serious contenders, Robert Lewandowski is the man to catch after his record-breaking start to the term.
