UEFA president claims there is "no way" Liverpool are denied the Premier League title
UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin sees “no way” in which Liverpool are denied the 2019/20 Premier League title this season despite the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Liverpool were 25 points ahead when the campaign was suspended due to coronavirus last month. It remains unclear, whether the Premier League will continue and reach its destination this season or not.
While talking to Slovenian sports daily Ekipa, Ceferin said,
“I see no way to keep Liverpool untitled. If it is played, then they will almost certainly win it. However, if it could not be played, it would also be necessary to announce the results in some way and then the Champions League should be determined.”
“I understand that fans will be disappointed if it happens in an empty stadium or even at a green table but I believe they will win the title one way or another.” However, Ceferin also stated that the plan is still to finish the leagues around the world.
He then clarified his statement and said that hypothetically, this is the plan. The board is preparing for such scenarios but the details are yet to be discussed. Liverpool hold a very good lead and certainly deserve the title this season but the question is the fact that they are still behind the number that would mathematically make them the winners.
This is the only point and a very strong point that rival clubs might pick up as football has always been unpredictable. Multiple mixed reports have been circulating, some saying that Liverpool will be the title-winners, while some suggesting that the season should be scrapped up and there should be no winner.
A problem arises in the latter case too. What will be the decision when it comes to European competitions? And when we consider the Premier League specifically, except for the gap between the first and the second spot, had the season been completed, the table could be very different than what it was before the suspension.
