On Friday during NBA Summer League against the Charlotte Hornets, Victor Wembanyama made his San Antonio Spurs debut in front of a roughly 19,000-strong sold-out crowd at Thomas & Mack Centre. They yelled when he stepped onto the floor, finally catching a look of the 19-year-old who has been the subject of greater buzz since LeBron James joined the league in 2003.
The highly anticipated No. 1 overall NBA Draft pick Victor Wembanyama finally played in his first NBA game on Friday the first night of the Las Vegas Summer League, which many NBA fans had been waiting for. Wembanyama's San Antonio Spurs defeated No. 2 selection Brandon Miller and the Charlotte Hornets 76-68.
In 27 minutes on Friday, Wembanyama had nine points, eight rebounds, and five blocks. He made 2-of-13 field goal attempts and 1-of-6 three-point attempts. He added three assists as well.
"I think all in all he did a good job," Spurs Summer League head coach Matt Nielsen said. "Obviously, there's a lot of attention on him, you can talk about the outside stuff. But, the physicality, that was something that tonight obviously wound him up as it would. I thought he navigated it for the most part pretty well."
He got off to a poor start, missing his first three shots despite the cheers of the audience with every touch of the ball. Fans chanted "MVP" when he made his free throw after making his first basket, an and-one layup, in the first quarter.
Wembanyama is anticipated to play one more Summer League game on Sunday before wrapping things up until the NBA preseason. After finishing his French season on June 16, the Spurs will probably want to give Wembanyama a break.
