Some interesting stats from the 2019-20 Premier League season
There was no shortage of thrills and spills over the course of the 2019-20 Premier League season and it has led to some quality stats in the process. Let’s have a look at some of the best stats of the 2019-20 season.
Alisson Becker has the same number of assists as Raheem Sterling
Not only has the Brazilian goalkeeper proven himself as one of the best stoppers in the Premier League but he has also been useful at the top end of the field. On the other hand, Manchester City winger managed just one assist in the Premier League this season. He scored 20 goals to compensate it but it’s still a remarkable stat considering the chances the Cityzens create.
The Liverpool keeper notched his assist after a superb volley to play Mohamed Salah, who scored the second goal in the Reds’ 2-0 triumph over Manchester United.
Manchester United break Premier League penalty record
It is no surprise as this is one of the stats that has been highlighted from the day the season concluded.
Manchester United won 14 penalties in the league this season, breaking the record for most penalties awarded in a single season. This also means that 0.6% of the penalties that have ever been given in the Premier League were awarded to United in the 2019-20 Premier League.
Kevin De Bruyne equals Thierry Henry’s assist record
Kevin De Bruyne has been increasing the standards for midfield play in the Premier League for some time now although this season saw the Belgian at his best and probably a threat for the other clubs to be aware next season.
His deft through-ball to Sterling in last day’s victory over Norwich saw the 29-year-old bag his 20th assist of the season, equalling the tally of the Frenchman in 2002/03.
The ex-Wolfsburg player also broke the record for most chances created from open play with 104, beating Eden Hazard’s total of 98 in 2014/15.
Mesut Ozil creates second-most chances for Arsenal
Seems like a long time ago that Mesut Ozil managed to put up 19 assists in the 2015/16 season. Since then the German has made headlines only for the reasons he’s not best known for.
Despite having not played for Arsenal since 7 March, only Nicolas Pepe (46) has created more chances than Ozil’s 39 for Gunners in the league this season.
Leicester City have picked up fewer points than Southampton since 9-0 demolition
When Leicester City recorded the largest ever top-flight away win with their nine-goal thrashing of Southampton in October, the Foxes looked very certain for a top-four finish while the Saints were having a tough time in the bottom three.
However, since then Ralph Hasenhuttl’s men went on to pick up more points in the remaining 28 games (44) than the Champions League-chasing Foxes (42).
Virgil van Dijk has as many Premier League goals for Liverpool as Andriy Shevchenko managed at Chelsea
Virgil van Dijk has spent half a season less than Andriy Shevchenko spent at Chelsea,
The center-back, however, has equaled the Ukrainian’s Premier League goal tally at their respective clubs.
Van Dijk’s goal away at Newcastle on the final day of the season took his Reds goal count up to nine, matching the former Milan frontman’s disappointing spell at Stamford Bridge.
Frank Lampard replicates Derby Stats with Chelsea
Making it to the Champions League in his first season as Chelsea boss is undoubtedly a success for Frank Lampard. Not to forget Chelsea were not allowed any transfers in the summer window.
This may not be his first season at management, having led Derby County to the play-off final the season prior.
What is surprising is that Lampard's campaigns with Derby and Chelsea have been similar.
Both the teams scored 69, conceded 54 (excluding the latter’s play-off campaign).
The Championship is eight games longer than the Premier League and it’s impressive that the Blues managed to score as many as the Rams in fewer games.
None of the top three scorers come from the top four clubs
Despite scoring a massive 322 goals between them, none of the Premier League’s top-four clubs had a representative on the goalscoring ‘podium’ this season.
Danny Ings and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined Jamie Vardy at the top of the scoring charts, meaning for only the second time in Premier League history, none of the top three scorers were from one of the top four sides.
The first time it happened was in the very first Premier League season, when Teddy Sheringham, Les Ferdinand and Dean Holdsworth made up the top three.
Carlo Ancelotti finishes in the bottom half for the first time in 25 years
Legendary manager Carlo Ancelotti made a huge decision when he took the job as the Toffees’ boss last December. After some promising performances in the beginning, Everton ended their season by taking just five points from their last six games and slipped to twelfth in the table.
This meant that Ancelotti finished in the bottom half of the table for the first time in his 25 years of management.
Jamie Vardy becomes oldest Premier League Golden Boot winner
At the age of 33, Vardy surpassed the record set by Didier Drogba in 2009/10, with the Ivorian claiming the prize after his 29 goals for Chelsea at the age of 32.
Vardy also became only the second Leicester player to finish top scorer in the top flight, after Gary Lineker achieved the feat with the Foxes in 1985.
Some other stats worth mentioning are Manchester City setting a record for the number of starting XI changes (143), Aymeric Laporte became the fastest player to win 50 Premier League games in just 59 games beating Drogba’s 60.
Jack Grealish broke the record for the most fouled player in a season with 167 fouls suffered, averaging four fouls won per game, while David Luiz broke the record for most penalties conceded, conceding five in 33 Arsenal appearances compared to conceding only three in 160 games at Chelsea.
