Australia thump Sri Lanka by 134 runs in the first T20I in Adelaide

In the first encounter of the Australian summer, the hosts were up against Sri Lanka for the first match of the three-match T20I series between the two teams. 

In what panned out to be a really one-sided affair in the end, Australia trounced the Islanders by a record margin of 134 runs in the first T20I at the Adelaide Oval. 

After being put into bat by the visitors, the Aussies were off to a flier as the Sri Lankan bowling had no answers to the hosts' explosive opening duo of Aaron Finch and David Warner. Both the openers made full use of the pleasant batting conditions and went about their business with ease. 

Finch was the chief tormentor as his rampaging efforts with the bat saw his side in a great position at the end of first ten overs. The Aussie skipper returned with an impressive 36-ball 64 including 8 fours and 3 sixes. 

After a stupendous start from the openers, Glenn Maxwell was promoted at No.3 to inflict even greater damage in the innings. 

The 31-year old didn't disappoint even an inch as he took the attack to the Sri Lankans who were caught napping with their ineffective plans. He walloped a 28-ball 62 to bat the opposition out of the game. 

Meanwhile, Warner also got into his act and the partnership between the two for the second wicket did no good to Sri Lanka's cause in the end. 

Warner brought up his highest T20I score with a single off the last ball to reach the three-figure mark. The hosts finished with 233 runs on the board, leaving the visitors with a daunting task at hand in the second innings. 

Sri Lanka got off to the poorest of starts as they lost Kusal Mendis on the fifth ball of their chase. The case got even worse for the Islanders after a dual strike in Pat Cummins' first over saw them reeling at 13 for 3 in the fourth over itself. 

Thereafter, it was an uphill task as the tourists failed to gather any momentum in their innings and kept on losing wickets at regular intervals. 

In the end, the Lankans could only manage 99 for 9 in their stipulated 20 overs. Adam Zampa was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/14 in his four overs. 

David Warner was nominated as the Man of the Match for his match-defining innings of 100 in just 56 balls. It was a ruthless effort from Australia to take a 1-0 lead in the series. With the series on the line, Sri Lanka will have a lot of thinking to do before the second T20I in Gabba on October 30.
