Is Chelsea's top scorer actually the weak link in the team?

It was no secret that Chelsea were in the market for a striker in January. This was because they haven't been clinical enough in games.

Chelsea have an excellent xG(Expected Goals), sitting just behind the leaders Liverpool in the xG table. The points table though, tells a different story. 

Tammy Abraham has exceeded expectations in his first season as Chelsea striker scoring 13 and assisting 3 in 24 appearances in the Premier League. The fact that this is his first season makes it all the more impressive.

Still, The worry for Chelsea is in the striking department itself. Tammy Abraham has missed 16 big chances this season. This is a lot for a team that relies mainly on him for goals since other sources of goals are not present. 

Tammy Abraham has been good, but the fact that Lampard has, again and again, highlighted the need for another striker is a testimony of the fact that Abraham hasn't been good enough.

The alternatives

Batshuayi, the Chelsea second choice striker, has been given his chances and saying that he has been wasteful with those chances is an understatement. 

He looks a player more for social media than the pitch. Giroud has reduced to a third choice role with Lampard making it clear that Giroud is not the type of player that suits his system.

Lampard has even tried to play Pulisic and Willian in the striker position in two matches in the last few minutes, but a short-term fix looks unlikely.

Striker is a department Chelsea will look to strengthen in the summer with links already appearing with Timo Werner and especially, Lyon's Moussa Dembele. 

Abraham has been good, but not "Chelsea Football Club first-choice striker" level good.
