Chelsea ace set for a move to Barcelona in the summer
The Brazilian winger Willian might move to Barcelona at the end of the ongoing season. It is understood that the Catalan giants are in advanced talks with Willian’s representatives and the two parties are on the verge of finalizing the deal.
Willian is in the last year of his current contract with Chelsea. Given the fact that he is in no mood to pen a new deal with the Blues, it is expected he will leave the club for free in the summer.
The 31-year old could have fetched Chelsea a decent transfer fee if they had shown the urgency to find a buyer for him this January.
However, the reason why Chelsea opted against it is was because they’re already lacking quality attackers in their ranks. The Blues didn’t want to let a seasoned campaigner like Willian go in such a scenario.
Willian was, however, not a part of the starting XI of Chelsea in the game against Leicester City on Saturday. Fans might reckon that it was a clear sign that he isn’t in long term plans of the club.
This was the first window in a while where Chelsea were allowed to do business and they were in the market for attackers. However, to the disappointment of their fans, they were not able to crack any big deals despite being linked to a few players.
The January window was disappointing not just for the Chelsea fans, but the manager Frank Lampard himself also seemed a little annoyed with how the window unfolded for the club.
Lampard admitted that with no big names coming to Chelsea in January, his side might not be the front-runner to finish in top 4 in the Premier League.
“This is not to talk ourselves down, because we’re six points clear in fourth, (but) now we probably become the underdogs, because the teams around us have strengthened.” Lampard was quoted as saying by The Guardian.
