Five tennis players with most key Singles titles in 2019
Although Grand Slam is the commonly used yardstick to measure a player's greatness among the pantheon of tennis greats, winning other tournaments is also of considerable importance.
Over the years, tennis has not only become more and more competitive but commensurately the prize money across tournaments especially Grand Slams, has been steadily increasing with all Grand Slams today awarding equal prize money to both Men and Women.
We take a look at the Top 5 players with the most number of key titles (Grand Slams, Year-end Finals, ATP Masters 1000, WTA Premier Mandatory) in 2019.
5. Bianca Andreescu (2)
There can be fewer challenging moments than surviving a second-set comeback from Serena Williams in a major final in front of a raucous hostile crowd.
The teenager, Bianca Andreescu dealt with it impeccably to break the American and become Canada's first ever Grand Slam Singles champion.
Following such an incredible show of character, 2019 was in total, a testament to the power of her belief and perseverance.
Andreescu won the US Open and also managed to be crowned as the winner at the Indian Wells Open.
4. Daniil Medvedev (2)
Daniil Medvedev’s sporting journey has been nothing but inspiring.
Medvedev won his first two ATP Masters 1000 titles: in Cincinnati and Shanghai, and also entered his maiden Grand Slam final at the US Open this year, losing out in gallant fashion to Rafael Nadal.
The Russian was making his maiden appearance in a Grand Slam final. Before the US Open, Medvedev had made the fourth round of a Slam only once.
2019 will definitely bring back fond memories for the talented Russian.
3. Ashleigh Barty (3)
After capping off the season by winning the Shiseido WTA Finals Shenzhen and ending the season as World No.1, Ashleigh Barty captured her third Player of the Month award to close out 2019.
The Australian is only the second ever woman from her country to be bestowed with the World Number 1 position.
She is a force to reckon with, and is known to display a lot of consistency throughout tournaments across the year.
Barty won the WTA Tour Finals, the French Open and the Miami Open in 2019.
2. Novak Djokovic (4)
It has been a phenomenal year for Novak Djokovic. The Serbian has been very successful in 2019, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
The Wimbledon final that he won against Roger Federer was nothing short of an epic.
Now, the Djoker heads to Australia, the event he’s dominated over the last decade. For a guy who was out of the top 20 two years back, his performance in 2019 has been great.
He also won the Madrid Open and the Paris Masters this year.
1. Rafael Nadal (4)
The greatest player to have ever graced the clay courts, Spaniard Rafael Nadal rose to prominence at a very young age.
He is now 33 and back at No. 1 at season’s end, a record 11 years after he finished on top for the first time.
Rafa won the French Open and the US Open, and was in serious form in the year of 2019.
He also managed to be champion at the Rome Masters and the Rogers Cup, in addition to steering Spain to a Davis Cup triumph in Madrid.
