Played most number of IPL playoffs
Chennai Super Kings have played the most number of playoffs in the history of IPL. They have made to the knockout stage 12 times now. CSK had a fantastic journey so far in this league as they ended runners-up five times and won the trophy 4 times. They are just behind the Mumbai Indians in terms of most IPL titles. In 2023, the Super Kings played the qualifier round for the 12th time and have made into the finals again by defeating the Gujarat Titans.
Played most number of IPL finals
The Super Kings have played the most number of finals in the history of the Indian Premier League. Before this season, they have played the finals 9 times and are now ready to play their 10th final which is the most number of IPL finals by any team so far. The Yellow Army have won 4 finals so far and lost 5 times. They are now just one step away from their 5th IPL title.
Defended the lowest IPL total
CSK has a record of successfully defending the lowest IPL total ever in IPL history. They made this record in 2009 IPL season which was held in South Africa. The Super Kings defended 116 runs against the Kings XI Punjab. All of their combined bowling effort got the entire Punjab team out on just 92 runs.Veteran Spinner Muttiah Muralitharan bowled fantastic spell in that match with outstanding figures of 2/8 in his 4 overs.
Most wickets by any bowler in an IPL season
Chennai Super Kings bowler Dwayne Bravo has a record of most number of wickets in a single IPL season. In 2013, Bravo was in his best form and took 32 wickets which is the highest by any bowler so far. Though, RCB’s bowler Harshal Patel has equalled the record in IPL 2021, but nobody has surpassed it yet.
Record of most matches as a Captain
Chennai Super Kings Skipper MS Dhoni has a record of most matches as a captain. He has played 225 matches in IPL as a captain. He is one of the most successful captain in IPL as he led the team to the title four times and is now ready to play another IPL final. In 2022, Dhoni stepped down from the captaincy but later took over it again after the then captain Ravindra Jadeja decided to discontinue with the captaincy after few matches.
Record of most number of consecutive playoffs
The Super Kings have reached the IPL playoffs in 10 consecutive seasons. From 2008 to 2019 they qualified for the playoffs in each and every season of IPL except two years as they missed 2016 and 2017 IPL season due to ban. They won back-to-back finals in 2010 and 2011 and finished as runners-up in 2012 & 2013. In 2020, for the first time they failed to qualify for the playoffs.
First team to score 100 runs in a power play
In 2014, Chennai Super Kings became the first IPL team to score 100 runs in a power play. This record was made against Kings XI Punjab where Punjab batted first and made 226 runs. Chennai came to chase this huge target and lost Faf Du Plessis at early stage. Then came Chennai’s best batter Suresh Raina who smashed the bowlers all around the ground. He scored 87 runs in just 25 balls in that match and hence the team scored 100 runs in the power play. In 2017, KKR broke this record of Chennai by scoring 105 runs in the power play against RCB.
