Sourav Ganguly is set become the next BCCI President

Former India captain, Sourav Ganguly became the second cricketer after Maharaja of Vizianagaram to serve as the president of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Maharaja of Vizianagaram, also known as Vizzy, was the first cricketer to become the BCCI president. He played three Test matches for India and captained the side during their tour to England in 1936. Vizzy served from 1954 to 1956.

Ganguly, who filed his nomination for the coveted post on Monday at the BCCI headquarters and was accompanied by Niranjan Shah and N Srinivasan.

While talking about the BCCI elections, the former Indian skipper said,"I didn't know I would be the president when I came down. You [reporters] asked me, and I told you it's Brijesh and when I went up, I came to know it has changed. I have never been in a BCCI election, and I never knew it worked like this".

Monday (October 14) was the last day to file the nomination for the post and Ganguly became the only candidate.The official announcement will be made on October 23.

Ganguly who is currently serving as the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president for the past five years, will be able to serve as BCCI president only until September 2020 due to the cooling-off period as an administrator can serve only six years on the trot.

Talking about his appointment, the former Indian cricketer said he wants to do 'something good'.

"I am taking over at a time when the BCCI has not been in greatest of position for the last three years. Its image has got hampered quite a lot. It's a great opportunity for me to do something good."

Sourav Ganguly represented India in more than 300 international matches and has scored more than 18,000 runs. He is credited as being the architect of India's success post the millennium.
