Tottenham complete their first signing of the Jose Mourinho era
Tottenham got off to a fantastic start under Jose Mourinho, but they have struggled in the last few matches. The squad seems thin and injuries to key players like Harry Kane and Tanguy Ndombele have not helped the cause. Spurs have now taken a dip in the transfer market by signing Gedson Fernandes from Benfica on an 18-month long deal.
The signing was very important considering the injuries in midfield. Mousa Sissoko had to undergo surgery to recover from a knee injury. On the other hand, Ndombele has a hip issue which will keep him out for a while. Along with these injury issues, there is the curious case of Christian Eriksen who has been linked with a move to Internazionale.
The Portuguese youngster has impressed everyone with his performances in the Primeira Liga. Fernandes, who made his debut in 2018, has already made 43 appearances for the club at this tender age. He also played his part in Benfica's league title-winning squad of 2018/2019, making 22 appearances in the season.
While it might not be easy to switch from the Portuguese league to the English league, Fernandes does have the talent. The 21-year-old had established himself as one of the most exciting prospects in Portugal. The box to box midfielder has the energy to burn and can add a new dimension to the slow midfield of Spurs.
Fernandes who is set to wear no.30 shirt for Tottenham seemed excited with the move. "It's one big dream to come to this big club," Gedson said after completing the move
The youngster might make his debut against Watford on the weekend. Tottenham need to win the match to stay in touch with the top four. The Portuguese youngster needs to get in the good books of his manager if he wants Spurs to exercise their right to buy in 2021.
