Herrera: Mourinho is the best manager in the world when things are well
Ander Herrera opened up on the reasons for his departure from Old Trafford and also discussed ex-Manchester United boss, Jose Mourinho’s management style.
Herrera believes that Jose is the world’s best manager when the going is good but he does not take losing well.
The PSG midfielder was one of the brightest stars playing under Mourinho but injuries troubled him a lot.
While reflecting on playing under the current Spurs boss Mourinho, Herrera said, “Mourinho is the best manager in the world when things go well. The relationship with the players, the way he treats everyone. I really liked his training sessions. Also, with his former assistant Rui Faria, they were a fantastic team together.”
“But it is also true when he loses, he does not take it in a good way. That is true. And he accepts that! He does not hide from it. We have a great relationship. The first year was fantastic when we won three titles,” Herrera added.
He also spoke about the second season when United finished second and lost the FA Cup final and claimed that the Red Devils were better on the day.
“It is true that the last six months were a bit different because he had some disagreements with the club. When you see your manager has some confrontations with the club, you do not perform the same way. Everything affects the training session, everything affects the daily work,” he said while talking to The Athletic.
When asked about the reasons he left Manchester United, Herrera told that it was not the money or the duration of the contract offer. Herrera felt that he had given enough for the club without complaining but the club didn’t do enough for him.
He was actually expecting a renewal when he won the Player of the Year award in 2017 but when things didn’t happen as he expected, he felt bad.
However, Herrera was clear enough to say that everything was professional and he has no personal problem with the club or its board members. “I’ll give him a hug because it is life,” he said when asked about his relationship with the United CEO, Ed Woodward.
